The Wineries

Either Codorniu or Freixenet

My favourite excursion is the visit to the most spectacular winery of Cordoniu.

The old building, now the visitors´centre and museum is a jewel in the late 19th century “Modernist” architecture.

Most of Spain´s champagne, officially known here as “Cava”, is produced in this area, just 40 kilometres from Barcelona. On arrival you will see a short film about the history of the Codorniu winery and the “champenoise” method of making this sparkling wine. Then we shall have the chance to see some fascinating exhibits in the museum before descending to the “caves” where millions of bottles are stored during the second all-important fermentation, during which the bubbles are formed. You will have a train ride up and down just some of the five floors of tunnels, (total length 35 kilometres!) through the old and the more modern storage areas.

Finally we shall have the wine tasting session and then the opportunity to buy some Codorniu cava.
